Activities
SOCIAL/LANGUAGE: Totem Preschool incorporates the Kelso Social Skills Program, Whole Body Learning and emotional intelligence curriculum into our daily routine. Kelso's concepts promote social and emotional development by empowering our preschoolers with verbal tools to help with conflict and cooperation. While building vocabulary and developing listening skills. Children also learn patience and an ability to negotiate. Vocabulary building is acquired through stories, discussions and brainstorming in our circle time.
ACADEMIA/KNOWLEDGE: Totem follows the local school district's recommendations for skill knowledge and mastery for kindergarten readiness. Totem’s Pre-K students are engrossed in themed units covering alphabet recognition and writing, as well as phonics and sight word memory. The majority of our teaching is through kinesthetic activities.
MATH/SCIENCE: We present sensory activities that help discover mathematic concepts including; sequencing, patterning, sorting, number recognition and quantity. Our science table encouraged natural and physical science exploration. Our science curriculum encourages inquisitive and investigative learning with hands-on materials and live animals. To amplify our natural sciences, Totem is partnered with Woodland Park Zoo and Animal Encounters to bring live animals to enhance our; arachnids, nocturnal animals, reptile and insect units.
ART: Our preschoolers experience daily activities through art. Developing small motor skills requires practice. Our “practice” is fun and engaging. Each day our preschoolers create through painting, drawing, cutting and gluing with a multitude of mediums, textures and colors.
PHYTNESS: is our program to exert energy and grow healthy preschoolers. Our PHYTNESS program includes a cardio warming up developing locomotor skills while moving to age appropriate music. PHYTNESS explores balancing activities with disks and many eye-hand coordination games using scarves, bean bags and numerous sizes and textured balls. A portion of each class focuses on acrobatics; rolls, wheels and stands, and all classes end with an obstacle course to challenge all levels of physical abilities.
